Consecration of the Firstborn

 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ² “Sanctify to Me every firstborn, the first ^[a]offspring of every womb among the sons of Israel, both of man and beast; it belongs to Me.”

³ Moses said to the people, “Remember this day in which you went out from Egypt, from the house of ^[b]slavery; for by ^[c]a powerful hand the Lord brought you out from this place. And nothing leavened shall be eaten. ⁴ On this day in the month of Abib, you are about to go forth. ⁵ It shall be when the Lord brings you to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, which He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall ^[d]observe this rite in this month. ⁶ For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the Lord. ⁷ Unleavened bread shall be eaten throughout the seven days; and nothing leavened shall be seen ^[e]among you, nor shall any leaven be seen ^[f]among you in all your borders. ⁸ You shall tell your son on that day, saying, ‘It is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ ⁹ And it shall ^[g]serve as a sign to you on your hand, and as a reminder ^[h]on your forehead, that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth; for with a powerful hand the Lord brought you out of Egypt. ¹⁰ Therefore, you shall keep this ordinance at its appointed time from ^[i]year to year.

¹¹ “Now when the Lord brings you to the land of the Canaanite, as He swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you, ¹² you shall ^[j]devote to the Lord the first ^[k]offspring of every womb, and ^[l]the first offspring of every beast that you own; the males belong to the Lord. ¹³ But every first ^[m]offspring of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. ¹⁴ And it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ then you shall say to him, ‘With a ^[n]powerful hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of ^[o]slavery. ¹⁵ It came about, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that the Lord killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore, I sacrifice to the Lord the males, the first ^[p]offspring of every womb, but every firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ ¹⁶ So it shall ^[q]serve as a sign on your hand and as ^[r]phylacteries ^[s]on your forehead, for with a ^[t]powerful hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”

¹⁵ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward. ¹⁶ As for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, and the sons of Israel shall ^[i]go through the midst of the sea on dry land. ¹⁷ As for Me, behold, I will ^[j]harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. ¹⁸ Then the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord, when I am honored through Pharaoh, through his chariots and his horsemen.”

¹⁹ The angel of God, who had been going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them. ²⁰ So it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel; and there was the cloud ^[k]along with the darkness, yet it gave light at night. Thus the one did not come near the other all night.

²¹ Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord ^[l]swept the sea back by a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into dry land, so the waters were divided. ²² The sons of Israel ^[m]went through the midst of the sea on the dry land, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. ²³ Then the Egyptians took up the pursuit, and all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots and his horsemen went in after them into the midst of the sea. ²⁴ At the morning watch, the Lord looked down on the ^[n]army of the Egyptians ^[o]through the pillar of fire and cloud and brought the ^[p]army of the Egyptians into confusion. ²⁵ He ^[q]caused their chariot wheels to swerve, and He made them drive with difficulty; so the Egyptians said, “Let ^[r]us flee from Israel, for the Lord is fighting for them against the Egyptians.”

²⁶ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may come back over the Egyptians, over their chariots and their horsemen.” ²⁷ So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal state at daybreak, while the Egyptians were fleeing ^[s]right into it; then the Lord ^[t]overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. ²⁸ The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, ^[u]even Pharaoh’s entire army that had gone into the sea after them; not even one of them remained. ²⁹ But the sons of Israel walked on dry land through the midst of the sea, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

 Now the Lord said to Moses, “One more plague I will bring on Pharaoh and on Egypt; after that he will let you go from here. When he lets you go, he will surely drive you out from here completely. ² Speak now in the ^[a]hearing of the people that each man ask from his neighbor and each woman from her neighbor for articles of silver and articles of gold.” ³ The Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. ⁴ Moses said, “Thus says the Lord, ‘About midnight I am going out into the midst of Egypt, ⁵ and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of the Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the millstones; all the firstborn of the cattle as well. ⁶ Moreover, there shall be a great cry in all the land of Egypt, such as there has not been before and such as shall never be again. ⁷ But against any of the sons of Israel a dog will not even ^[c]bark, whether against man or beast, that you may ^[d]understand how the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.’ ⁸ All these your servants will come down to me and bow themselves ^[e]before me, saying, ‘Go out, you and all the people who ^[f]follow you,’ and after that I will go out.” And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.

⁹ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen to you, so that My wonders will be multiplied in the land of Egypt.” ¹⁰ Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh; yet the Lord ^[g]hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the sons of Israel go out of his land.

For it had not become leavened, since they were driven out of Egypt and could not delay, nor had they ^[ag]prepared any provisions for themselves.

⁴⁰ Now the time ^[ah]that the sons of Israel lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. ⁴¹ And at the end of four hundred and thirty years, ^[ai]to the very day, all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt.

⁴³ The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the ordinance of the Passover: no ^[am]foreigner is to eat of it; ⁴⁴ but every man’s slave purchased with money, after you have circumcised him, then he may eat of it. ⁴⁵ A sojourner or a hired servant shall not eat of it. ⁴⁶ It is to be eaten in a single house; you are not to bring forth any of the flesh outside of the house, nor are you to break any bone of it. ⁴⁷ All the congregation of Israel are to ^[an]celebrate this. ⁴⁸ But if a ^[ao]stranger sojourns with you, and ^[ap]celebrates the Passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near to ^[aq]celebrate it; and he shall be like a native of the land. But no uncircumcised person may eat of it. ^49 [ar]The same law shall ^[as]apply to the native as to the ^[at]stranger who sojourns among you.”

⁵⁰ Then all the sons of Israel did so; they did just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron. ⁵¹ And on that same day the Lord brought the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt ^[au]by their hosts.

¹⁸ Behold, about this time tomorrow, I will ^[j]send a very heavy hail, such as has not been seen in Egypt from the day it was founded ^[k]until now. ¹⁹ Now therefore send, bring your livestock and whatever you have in the field to safety. ¹² Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up on the land of Egypt and eat every plant of the land, even all that the hail has left.” ¹³ So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and the Lord directed an east wind on the land all that day and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind ^[m]brought the locusts. ¹⁴ The locusts came up over all the land of Egypt and settled in all the territory of Egypt; they were very ^[n]numerous. There had never been so many ^[o]locusts, nor would there be so many ^[p]again. ¹⁵ For they covered the surface of the whole land, so that the land was darkened; and they ate every plant of the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Thus nothing green was left on tree or plant of the field through all the land of Egypt. ¹⁶ Then Pharaoh hurriedly called for Moses and Aaron, and he said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. ¹⁷ Now therefore, please forgive my sin only this once, and make supplication to the Lord your God, that He would only remove this death from me.” ¹⁸ He went out from Pharaoh and made supplication to the Lord. ¹⁹ So the Lord shifted the wind to a very strong west wind which took up the locusts and drove them into the ^[q]Red Sea; not one locust was left in all the territory of Egypt. ²⁰ But the Lord ^[r]hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the sons of Israel go.

²¹ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even a darkness which may be felt.” ²² So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days. ²³ They did not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days, but all the sons of Israel had light in their dwellings. ²⁴ Then Pharaoh called to Moses, and said, “Go, serve the Lord; only let your flocks and your herds be detained. Even your little ones may go with you.” ²⁵ But Moses said, “You must also ^[s]let us have sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may ^[t]sacrifice them to the Lord our God. ²⁶ Therefore, our livestock too shall go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind, for we shall take some of them to serve the Lord our God. And until we arrive there, we ourselves do not know with what we shall serve the Lord.” ²⁷ But the Lord ^[u]hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was not willing to let them go. ²⁸ Then Pharaoh said to him, “Get away from me! ^[v]Beware, do not see my face again, for in the day you see my face you shall die!” ²⁹ Moses said, “You are right; I shall never see your face again!”

 Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I make you as God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron shall be your prophet. ² You shall speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron shall speak to Pharaoh that he let the sons of Israel go out of his land. ³ But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart that I may multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt. ⁴ When Pharaoh does not listen to you, then I will lay My hand on Egypt and bring out My hosts, My people the sons of Israel, from the land of Egypt by great judgments. ⁵ The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the sons of Israel from their midst.” ⁶ So Moses and Aaron did it; as the Lord commanded them, thus they did. ⁷ Moses was eighty years old and Aaron ^[a]eighty-three, when they spoke to Pharaoh.

¹⁴ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is ^[g]stubborn; he refuses to let the people go. ¹⁵ Go to Pharaoh in the morning ^[h]as he is going out to the water, and station yourself to meet him on the bank of the Nile; and you shall take in your hand the staff that was turned into a serpent. ¹⁶ You shall say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you, saying, “Let My people go, that they may serve Me in the wilderness. ²⁰ So Moses and Aaron did even as the Lord had commanded. And he lifted up ^[m]the staff and struck the water that was in the Nile, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, and all the water that was in the Nile was turned to blood. ²¹ The fish that were in the Nile died, and the Nile ^[n]became foul, so that the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile. ¹⁰ Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.” ¹¹ But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” ¹² And He said, “Certainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall ^[f]worship God at this mountain.”

 Then Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers and their flocks and their herds and all that they have, have come out of the land of Canaan; and behold, they are in the land of Goshen.” ² He took five men from among his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh. ³ Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?” So they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds, both we and our fathers.” ⁴ They said to Pharaoh, “We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. ²⁰ So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for ^[ag]every Egyptian sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. Thus the land became Pharaoh’s. ²¹ As for the people, he removed them to the cities from one end of Egypt’s border to the other. ²² Only the land of the priests he did not buy, for the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh, and they ^[ah]lived off the allotment which Pharaoh gave them. Therefore, they did not sell their land. ²³ Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, I have today bought you and your land for Pharaoh; now, here is seed for you, and you may sow the land. ^24 [ai]At the harvest you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and ^[aj]four-fifths shall be your own for seed of the field and for your food and for those of your households and as food for your little ones.” ²⁵ So they said, “You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s slaves.” ²⁶ Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt valid to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; only the land of the priests ^[ak]did not become Pharaoh’s.

²⁷ Now Israel ^[al]lived in the land of Egypt, in ^[am]Goshen, and they acquired property in it and were fruitful and became very numerous. ²⁸ Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; so the ^[an]length of Jacob’s life was one hundred and forty-seven years.

²⁹ When ^[ao]the time for Israel to die drew near, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Please, if I have found favor in your sight, place now your hand under my thigh and deal with me in kindness and ^[ap]faithfulness. ⁸ When Israel saw Joseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?” ⁹ Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” So he said, “Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them.” ¹⁰ Now the eyes of Israel were so dim from age that he could not see. 45 Then Joseph could not control himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried, “Have everyone go out from me.” So there ^[a]was no man with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. ² He ^[b]wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard of it. ³ Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence.

⁴ Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come ^[c]closer to me.” And they came ^[d]closer.
