The Journey Resumed

 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Depart, go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your ^[a]descendants I will give it.’ ² I will send an angel before you and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite. ³ Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, because you are ^[b]an obstinate people, and I might destroy you on the way.”

⁴ When the people heard this ^[c]sad word, they went into mourning, and none of them put on his ornaments. ⁵ For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the sons of Israel, ‘You are ^[d]an obstinate people; should I go up in your midst for one moment, I would destroy you. Now therefore, put off your ornaments from you, that I may know what I shall do with you.’” ⁶ So the sons of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.

⁷ Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, a good distance from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting which was outside the camp. ⁸ And it came about, whenever Moses went out to the tent, that all the people would arise and stand, each at the entrance of his tent, and gaze after Moses until he entered the tent. ⁹ Whenever Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent; and ^[e]the Lord would speak with Moses. ¹⁰ When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would arise and worship, each at the entrance of his tent. ¹¹ Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. When ^[f]Moses returned to the camp, his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.

Moses Intercedes

¹² Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people!’ But You Yourself have not let me know whom You will send with me. Moreover, You have said, ‘I have known you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.’ ¹³ Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight. Consider too, that this nation is Your people.” ¹⁴ And He said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” ¹⁵ Then he said to Him, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here. ¹⁶ For how then can it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not by Your going with us, so that we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the other people who are upon the face of the ^[g]earth?”

¹⁷ The Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing of which you have spoken; for you have found favor in My sight and I have known you by name.” ¹⁸ Then ^[h]Moses said, “I pray You, show me Your glory!” ¹⁹ And He said, “I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the Lord before you; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion on whom I will show compassion.” ²⁰ But He said, “You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!” ²¹ Then the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place ^[i]by Me, and you shall stand there on the rock; ²² and it will come about, while My glory is passing by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by. ²³ Then I will take My hand away and you shall see My back, but My face shall not be seen.”

The Two Tablets Replaced

 Now the Lord said to Moses, “Cut out for yourself two stone tablets like the former ones, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets which you shattered. ² So be ready by morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and ^[a]present yourself there to Me on the top of the mountain. ³ No man is to come up with you, nor let any man be seen ^[b]anywhere on the mountain; even the flocks and the herds may not graze in front of that mountain.” ⁴ So he cut out two stone tablets like the former ones, and Moses rose up early in the morning and went up to Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and he took two stone tablets in his hand. ⁵ The Lord descended in the cloud and stood there with him as ^[c]he called upon the name of the Lord. ⁶ Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and ^[d]truth; ⁷ who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.” ⁸ Moses made haste ^[e]to bow low toward the earth and worship. ⁹ He said, “If now I have found favor in Your sight, O Lord, I pray, let the Lord go along in our midst, even though ^[f]the people are so obstinate, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as Your own ^[g]possession.”

¹⁸ “You shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days you are to eat unleavened bread, ^[n]as I commanded you, at the appointed time in the month of Abib, for in the month of Abib you came out of Egypt.

¹⁹ “The first offspring from every womb belongs to Me, and all your male livestock, the first offspring from ^[o]cattle and sheep. ²⁰ You shall redeem with a lamb the ^[p]first offspring from a donkey; and if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. You shall redeem all the firstborn of your sons. ^[q]None shall appear before Me empty-handed.

²¹ “You shall work six days, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during plowing time and harvest you shall rest. ²² You shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks, that is, the first fruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year. ²³ Three times a year all your males are to appear before the Lord ^[r]God, the God of Israel. ²⁴ For I will ^[s]drive out nations before you and enlarge your borders, and no man shall covet your land when you go up three times a year to appear before the Lord your God.

²⁵ “You shall not ^[t]offer the blood of My sacrifice with leavened bread, nor is the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover to ^[u]be left over until morning.

²⁶ “You shall bring the very first of the first fruits of your soil into the house of the Lord your God.

²⁷ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write ^[v]down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” ²⁸ So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread or drink water. And ^[w]he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten ^[x]Commandments.

Moses’ Face Shines

²⁹ It came about when Moses was coming down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the testimony were in Moses’ hand as he was coming down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because of his speaking with Him. ³⁰ So when Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. ³¹ Then Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers in the congregation returned to him; and Moses spoke to them. ³² Afterward all the sons of Israel came near, and he commanded them to do everything that the Lord had spoken ^[y]to him on Mount Sinai. ³³ When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. ³⁴ But whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with Him, he would take off the veil until he came out; and whenever he came out and spoke to the sons of Israel what he had been commanded, ³⁵ the sons of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone. So Moses would replace the veil over his face until he went in to speak with Him.

Consecration of the Priests

 “Now this is ^[a]what you shall do to them to consecrate them to minister as priests to Me: take one young bull and two rams without blemish, ² and unleavened bread and unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers ^[b]spread with oil; you shall make them of fine wheat flour. ³ You shall put them in one basket, and present them in the basket along with the bull and the two rams. ⁴ Then you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the doorway of the tent of meeting and wash them with water. ⁵ You shall take the garments, and put on Aaron the tunic and the robe of the ephod and the ephod and the ^[c]breastpiece, and gird him with the skillfully woven band of the ephod; ⁶ and you shall set the turban on his head and put the holy crown on the turban. ⁷ Then you shall take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him. ⁸ You shall bring his sons and put tunics on them. ⁹ You shall gird them with sashes, Aaron and his sons, and bind ^[d]caps on them, and they shall have the priesthood by a perpetual statute. So you shall ^[e]ordain Aaron and his sons.

The Sacrifices

¹⁰ “Then you shall bring the bull before the tent of meeting, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the bull. ¹¹ You shall slaughter the bull before the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting. ¹² You shall take some of the blood of the bull and put it on the horns of the altar with your finger; and you shall pour out all the blood at the base of the altar. ¹³ You shall take all the fat that covers the entrails and the ^[f]lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, and offer them up in smoke on the altar. ¹⁴ But the flesh of the bull and its hide and its refuse, you shall burn with fire outside the camp; it is a sin offering.

¹⁵ “You shall also take the one ram, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the ram; ¹⁶ and you shall slaughter the ram and shall take its blood and sprinkle it around on the altar. ¹⁷ Then you shall cut the ram into its pieces, and wash its entrails and its legs, and put them ^[g]with its pieces and ^[h]its head. ¹⁸ You shall offer up in smoke the whole ram on the altar; it is a burnt offering to the Lord: it is a soothing aroma, an offering by fire to the Lord.

¹⁹ “Then you shall take the ^[i]other ram, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the ram. ²⁰ You shall slaughter the ram, and take some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear and on the lobes of his sons’ right ears and on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet, and sprinkle the rest of the blood around on the altar. ²¹ Then you shall take some of the blood that is on the altar and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garments and on his sons and on his sons’ garments with him; so he and his garments shall be consecrated, as well as his sons and his sons’ garments with him.

²² “You shall also take the fat from the ram and the fat tail, and the fat that covers the entrails and the ^[j]lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them and the right thigh (for it is a ram of ^[k]ordination), ²³ and one cake of bread and one cake of bread mixed with oil and one wafer from the basket of unleavened bread which is set before the Lord; ²⁴ and you shall put ^[l]all these ^[m]in the ^[n]hands of Aaron and ^[o]in the ^[p]hands of his sons, and shall wave them as a wave offering before the Lord. ²⁵ You shall take them from their hands, and offer them up in smoke on the altar on the burnt offering for a soothing aroma before the Lord; it is an offering by fire to the Lord.

²⁶ “Then you shall take the breast of Aaron’s ram of ^[q]ordination, and wave it as a wave offering before the Lord; and it shall be your portion. ²⁷ You shall consecrate the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering which was waved and which was ^[r]offered from the ram of ^[s]ordination, from the one which was for Aaron and from the one which was for his sons. ²⁸ It shall be for Aaron and his sons as their portion forever from the sons of Israel, for it is a heave offering; and it shall be a heave offering from the sons of Israel from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, even their heave offering to the Lord.

²⁹ “The holy garments of Aaron shall be for his sons after him, ^[t]that in them they may be anointed and ordained. ³⁰ For seven days the one of his sons who is priest in his stead shall put them on when he enters the tent of meeting to minister in the holy place.

The Altar of Incense

 “Moreover, you shall make an altar as a place for burning incense; you shall make it of acacia wood. ² Its length shall be a ^[a]cubit, and its width a cubit, it shall be square, and its height shall be two cubits; its horns shall be ^[b]of one piece with it. ³ You shall overlay it with pure gold, its top and its ^[c]sides all around, and its horns; and you shall make a gold molding all around for it. ⁴ You shall make two gold rings for it under its molding; you shall make them on its two side walls—on ^[d]opposite sides—and ^[e]they shall be holders for poles with which to carry it. ⁵ You shall make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. ⁶ You shall put ^[f]this altar in front of the veil that is ^[g]near the ark of the testimony, in front of the ^[h]mercy seat that is over the ark of the testimony, where I will meet with you. ⁷ Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it; he shall burn it every morning when he trims the lamps. ⁸ When Aaron ^[i]trims the lamps at ^[j]twilight, he shall burn incense. There shall be perpetual incense before the Lord throughout your generations. ⁹ You shall not offer any strange incense on ^[k]this altar, or burnt offering or meal offering; and you shall not pour out a drink offering on it. ¹⁰ Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year; he shall make atonement on it with the blood of the sin offering of atonement once a year throughout your generations. It is most holy to the Lord.”

¹¹ The Lord also spoke to Moses, saying, ¹² “When you take a ^[l]census of the sons of Israel ^[m]to number them, then each one of them shall give a ransom for ^[n]himself to the Lord, when you ^[o]number them, so that there will be no plague among them when you ^[p]number them. ¹³ This is what everyone who ^[q]is numbered shall give: half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty gerahs), half a shekel as a ^[r]contribution to the Lord. ¹⁴ Everyone who ^[s]is numbered, from twenty years old and over, shall give the ^[t]contribution to the Lord. ¹⁵ The rich shall not pay more and the poor shall not pay less than the half shekel, when you give the ^[u]contribution to the Lord to make atonement for ^[v]yourselves. ¹⁶ You shall take the atonement money from the sons of Israel and shall give it for the service of the tent of meeting, that it may be a memorial for the sons of Israel before the Lord, to make atonement for ^[w]yourselves.”

¹⁷ The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ¹⁸ “You shall also make a laver of ^[x]bronze, with its base of bronze, for washing; and you shall put it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and you shall put water in it. ¹⁹ Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet from it; ²⁰ when they enter the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water, so that they will not die; or when they approach the altar to minister, by offering up in smoke a fire sacrifice to the Lord. ²¹ So they shall wash their hands and their feet, so that they will not die; and it shall be a perpetual statute for them, for ^[y]Aaron and his ^[z]descendants throughout their generations.”

The Anointing Oil

²² Moreover, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²³ “Take also for yourself the finest of spices: of flowing myrrh five hundred shekels, and of fragrant cinnamon half as much, two hundred and fifty, and of fragrant cane two hundred and fifty, ²⁴ and of cassia five hundred, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil a hin. ²⁵ You shall make ^[aa]of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil. ²⁶ With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, ²⁷ and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, ²⁸ and the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the laver and its stand. ²⁹ You shall also consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall be holy. ³⁰ You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister as priests to Me. ³¹ You shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. ³² It shall not be poured on ^[ab]anyone’s body, nor shall you make any like it in ^[ac]the same proportions; it is holy, and it shall be holy to you. ³³ Whoever shall mix any like it or whoever puts any of it on a ^[ad]layman ^[ae]shall be cut off from his people.’”

³⁴ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Take for yourself spices, stacte and onycha and galbanum, spices with pure frankincense; there shall be an equal part of each. ³⁵ With it you shall make incense, a perfume, the work of a perfumer, salted, pure, and holy. ³⁶ You shall beat some of it very fine, and put part of it before the testimony in the tent of meeting where I will meet with you; it shall be most holy to you. ³⁷ The incense which you shall make, you shall not make in ^[af]the same proportions for yourselves; it shall be holy to you for the Lord. ³⁸ Whoever shall make any like it, to ^[ag]use as perfume, ^[ah]shall be cut off from his people.”

The Bronze Altar

 “And you shall make the altar of acacia wood, five ^[a]cubits long and five cubits wide; the altar shall be square, and its height shall be three cubits. ² You shall make its horns on its four corners; its horns shall be of one piece with it, and you shall overlay it with ^[b]bronze. ³ You shall make its pails for removing its ashes, and its shovels and its basins and its forks and its firepans; you shall make all its utensils of bronze. ⁴ You shall make for it a grating of network of bronze, and on the net you shall make four bronze rings ^[c]at its four corners. ⁵ You shall put it beneath, under the ledge of the altar, so that the net will reach halfway up the altar. ⁶ You shall make poles for the altar, poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with bronze. ⁷ Its poles shall be inserted into the rings, so that the poles shall be on the two sides of the altar when it is carried. ⁸ You shall make it hollow with planks; as it was shown to you in the mountain, so they shall make it.

Court of the Tabernacle

⁹ “You shall make the court of the ^[d]tabernacle. ^[e]On the south side there shall be hangings for the court of fine twisted linen one hundred cubits long for one side; ¹⁰ and its pillars shall be twenty, with their twenty ^[f]sockets of bronze; the hooks of the pillars and their ^[g]bands shall be of silver. ¹¹ Likewise for the north side in length there shall be hangings one hundred cubits long, and its twenty pillars with their twenty ^[h]sockets of bronze; the hooks of the pillars and their bands shall be of silver. ¹² For the width of the court on the west side shall be hangings of fifty cubits with their ten pillars and their ten ^[i]sockets. ¹³ The width of the court on the ^[j]east side shall be fifty cubits. ¹⁴ The hangings for the one ^[k]side of the gate shall be fifteen cubits with their three pillars and their three ^[l]sockets. ¹⁵ And for the ^[m]other ^[n]side shall be hangings of fifteen cubits with their three pillars and their three ^[o]sockets. ¹⁶ For the gate of the court there shall be a screen of twenty cubits, of ^[p]blue and purple and scarlet material and fine twisted linen, the work of a ^[q]weaver, with their four pillars and their four ^[r]sockets. ¹⁷ All the pillars around the court shall be furnished with silver bands with their hooks of silver and their ^[s]sockets of bronze. ¹⁸ The length of the court shall be one hundred cubits, and the width fifty throughout, and the height five cubits of fine twisted linen, and their ^[t]sockets of bronze. ¹⁹ All the utensils of the tabernacle used in all its service, and all its pegs, and all the pegs of the court, shall be of bronze.

²⁰ “You shall charge the sons of Israel, that they bring you clear oil of beaten olives for the ^[u]light, to make a lamp ^[v]burn continually. ²¹ In the tent of meeting, outside the veil which is before the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall keep it in order from evening to morning before the Lord; it shall be a perpetual statute throughout their generations ^[w]for the sons of Israel.

Offerings for the Sanctuary

Ark of the Covenant

The Table of Showbread

The Golden Lampstand

³¹ “Then you shall make a lampstand of pure gold. ²⁷ Then they came to Elim where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms, and they camped there beside the waters.

The Lord Provides Manna

 Then they set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt. ² The whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. ³ The sons of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of ^[a]meat, when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

⁴ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My ^[b]instruction. ⁵ On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” ⁶ So Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, “At evening ^[c]you will know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt; ⁷ and in the morning ^[d]you will see the glory of the Lord, for He hears your grumblings against the Lord; and what are we, that you grumble against us?”

The Lord Provides Meat

⁸ Moses said, “This will happen when the Lord gives you ^[e]meat to eat in the evening, and bread to the full in the morning; for the Lord hears your grumblings which you grumble against Him. And what are we? Your grumblings are not against us but against the Lord.”

⁹ Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, ‘Come near before the Lord, for He has heard your grumblings.’” ¹⁰ It came about as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, that they ^[f]looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. ¹¹ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ¹² “I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, ‘^[g]At twilight you shall eat ^[h]meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”

¹³ So it came about at evening that the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. ¹⁴ When the layer of dew ^[i]evaporated, behold, on the ^[j]surface of the wilderness there was a fine flake-like thing, fine as the frost on the ground. ¹⁵ When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “^[k]What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat. ¹⁶ This is ^[l]what the Lord has commanded, ‘Gather of it every man ^[m]as much as he should eat; you shall take ^[n]an omer apiece according to the number of persons each of you has in his tent.’” ¹⁷ The sons of Israel did so, and some gathered much and some little. ¹⁸ When they measured it with an omer, he who had gathered much had no excess, and he who had gathered little had no lack; every man gathered ^[o]as much as he should eat. ¹⁹ Moses said to them, “Let no man leave any of it until morning.” ²⁰ But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and became foul; and Moses was angry with them. ²¹ They gathered it morning by morning, every man ^[p]as much as he should eat; but when the sun grew hot, it would melt.

The Sabbath Observed

²² Now on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. When all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, ²³ then he said to them, “This is what the Lord ^[q]meant: Tomorrow is a sabbath observance, a holy sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over ^[r]put aside to be kept until morning.” ²⁴ So they ^[s]put it aside until morning, as Moses had ordered, and it did not become foul nor was there any worm in it. ²⁵ Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. ²⁶ Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be ^[t]none.”

²⁷ It came about on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. ²⁸ Then the Lord said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My ^[u]instructions? ²⁹ See, ^[v]the Lord has given you the sabbath; therefore He gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain every man in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.” ³⁰ So the people rested on the seventh day.

³¹ The house of Israel named it ^[w]manna, and it was like coriander seed, white, and its taste was like wafers with honey. ³² Then Moses said, “This is ^[x]what the Lord has commanded, ‘Let an omerful of it be kept throughout your generations, that they may see the bread that I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’” ³³ Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put an omerful of manna in it, and place it before the Lord to be kept throughout your generations.” ³⁴ As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the Testimony, to be kept. ³⁵ The sons of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. ³⁶ (Now an omer is a tenth of an ^[y]ephah.)
